'Promising' new breakthrough for recycling EV batteries discovered by Swedish scientists

Swedish scientists have made a significant breakthrough in the recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. They have developed a more efficient method that allows for the recovery of 100% of the aluminium and 98% of the lithium in these batteries. This new process is not only more effective but also avoids the use of expensive or harmful chemicals. The researchers hope that this method can be scaled up and utilized by the industry in the future.
How are electric car batteries recycled?
The current recycling method, known as hydrometallurgy, involves dissolving all the metals in an EV battery cell using an inorganic acid. The impurities, such as aluminium and copper, are then removed, and valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, manganese, and lithium are recovered. However, the purification steps in this process can result in the loss of lithium.
Can EV batteries be recycled more efficiently?
The Swedish researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have developed a recycling method that reverses the order of the process. They recover the lithium and aluminium first, while minimizing the loss of other valuable raw materials like nickel, cobalt, and manganese. This involves dissolving the finely ground battery cells in an organic liquid called oxalic acid, which is environmentally friendly. The metals dissolve in the acid while other metals remain as solids. The final step is to separate these metals to recover the lithium for reuse in new batteries.
This new method shows promise and warrants further exploration as a route for battery recycling. The research group at Chalmers University has been actively involved in collaborations with companies like Volvo and Northvolt to advance electric car battery recycling.
