The megatsunami in Greenland shook the Earth for nine days.
▪️ In September 2023, a huge landslide in a Greenland fjord caused an earthquake like a giant bell was shaking the earthquake that was felt across the Earth for nine days.
▪️ Scientists recorded an unusual seismic signal that traveled from the east of Greenland to Antarctica in less than an hour. The seismic waves continued to be recorded around the world for the next nine days, creating an effect as if the Earth was being shaken by a giant bell.
▪️ The source of these signals — is a colossal landslide in a remote Greenland fjord that generated a tsunami with waves up to 200 meters high. The mass of water hitting the rocks inside the fjord created seismic waves so powerful that they spread around the globe.
▪️ Dr. Stephen Hicks, one of the leaders of the research team, said: "When I first saw the seismic signal, I was completely baffled. Never before had such a long-lasting, globally propagating seismic wave containing only one oscillation frequency been recorded."
▪️ It took 68 scientists from 40 institutions in 15 countries to solve the mystery by combining seismic data, field measurements, ground and satellite imagery, and high-resolution computer modeling of tsunami waves.
The analysis, published in the Guardian, (theguardian.com/environment/20…) citing Science, (science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…) showed that 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice crashed into the fjord and traveled at least 2,200 meters across it.
▪️ Prof. Anne Mangeni, a specialist at the Institute of Terrestrial Physics in Paris, said: "These vibrations traveled from Greenland to Antarctica in less than an hour. So we have seen the impact of climate change affecting the whole world in just an hour."
‼️ Such events will become more frequent as global temperatures continue to rise.
