Climate change threatens plankton essential to marine ecosystems
Study reveals impacts of ocean warming and acidification on organisms crucial to the carbon cycle

14/01/2025 – A recent study, published in the journal Nature, revealed that several species of planktonic foraminifera may face extreme environmental conditions by the end of this century, putting their survival at risk. These single-celled organisms, known for having calcium carbonate shells, play an essential role in the dynamics of marine ecosystems and in the storage of carbon in the oceans.

species are migrating to colder waters towards the poles, or to deeper layers of the ocean, seeking to escape the high temperatures at the surface. Despite these adaptations, the populations of these organisms have declined with tropical species suffering the greatest losses due to the more intense warming in these regions, which interferes with their reproductive cycles I hope and they will recheck climate change impact
