Pixel Planet Today's post

Yesterday was #WorldRainforestDay, and while we covered the biodiversity of rainforests in our last post, that biodiversity spreads much further than hotspots like the Amazon and Madagascar. Rainforests all over the globe harbor their own endemic species, and that includes the sliver of rainforests along the Australian coast. . Fact: Almost 80 percent of flowering plants found in Australian rainforests can't be found anywhere else in the world. One of which, Idiospermum Australiense (commonly known as ribbonwood or idiot fruit), was the first flowering plant roughly 120 million years ago! Though the plant has had plenty of time to spread to other islands, the large seeds are highly toxic, making distribution very difficult. . . Read more facts about rainforests:

...Or read more about idiot fruit:

. Graphic shows a ribbonwood/idiot fruit sapling coming out of a cracked open seed with a small bloom. The factoid reads: "Almost 80 percent of flowering plants found in Australian rainforests can't be found anywhere else in the world." . Pixel Planet Today is created by @Terrabyte.
