Alok Sharma condemns government’s oil and gas bill as vote passes first hurdle

Alok Sharma has said the government’s oil and gas bill going through the Commons will not cut household energy costs or create jobs and instead will break the UK’s promise to phase out fossil fuels. The government’s offshore petroleum licensing bill passed its second reading on Monday night with 293 votes to 211 against. No Conservative MPs voted against it, and Sharma – the former business secretary who served as president of the Cop26 climate talks – abstained. The legislation would place the North Sea Transition Authority under a duty to run annual applications for new offshore oil and gas licences. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of hundreds of scientists, has said no new oil and gas licences should be granted if the world is to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Going beyond this would cause climate catastrophe, ruining the lives of millions. UK ministers promised to phase out oil and gas at last year’s Cop28 conference in Dubai. https://getsnap.link/brmWqhRh1My

The passage of the bill with no Conservative opposition contradicts the IPCC's recommendations and raises concerns about prioritizing short-term economic gains over long-term climate stability.

He is lamenting after clearly abstaining from the vote. How hypocritic

The imperative to move away from reliance on oil and gas is clear.

It's disheartening to see the government's oil and gas bill passing its second reading, especially given the concerns raised by Alok Sharma. The decision to move forward with legislation that supports new offshore oil and gas licenses contradicts the commitments made at international climate conferences, including last year's Cop28 in Dubai. Abstaining from the vote, Alok Sharma, the former business secretary and president of the Cop26 climate talks, has rightly criticized the bill, emphasizing that it won't contribute to cutting household energy costs, creating jobs, or fulfilling the UK's promise to phase out fossil fuels. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's explicit recommendation against granting new oil and gas licenses aligns with the urgent need to limit global heating to avoid catastrophic climate consequences.

It's encouraging to see leaders like Alok Sharma speaking out against bills that may not align with long-term environmental goals.

It's sad, instead they should encourage rigorous laws that will ensure climate friendly practices.

@grace_njeri_804 leaders must show responsibility by making favourable laws and regulations to take care of our climate.

This is a great call but he could have made it better by voting no to the bill rather than abstaining. Leaders must be courageous enough when it comes to defending the environment.
