EU plans to employ satellites for monitoring climate-driven wildfires and detecting unauthorized logging.

The European Commission, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), is joining forces to utilize satellites for addressing threats posed by the climate crisis and combating illegal logging in the forests of the European Union (EU).
Under a proposed new law, the EU aims to leverage Copernicus Sentinel satellites to gather comprehensive forest data, enabling proactive measures against challenges such as logging and climate change-induced wildfires. The commission underscores the significance of space-based technology and data in the face of the pressing need for global climate action.
A statement from the ESA emphasizes the crucial role of actionable information in the fight against climate change, supporting knowledge-driven policies and initiatives, and ensuring a balanced approach that aligns with sustainable economic development and societal benefits.
In addition to satellite data, EU member countries would be mandated to monitor on-the-ground trends, including tree volume and the preservation of ancient forest locations.

The use of technology such as satellites can provide valuable data and insights, which can aid in the development of effective strategies for mitigating these environmental issues. However, it is important to ensure that these monitoring efforts are accompanied by effective policy measures and enforcement mechanisms to ensure that they are truly impactful.
