This report mainly studies Project Canary, one of the leaders in the US certification industry, by conducting more than 80 surveys in 38 different oil and gas production sites in Colorado, USA. Their analysis shows that these certification companies use unreliable technology and methods that fail to monitor nearly all methane pollution events. When compared with air quality monitoring reports filed by operators for each site, only one of the 23 documented pollution events was detected by Continuous Emissions Monitors at the surveyed sites.
The authors of the report argue that this allow fossil fuel companies to make unfounded claims about the methane gas they bring to market, using these gas certifications to label their production as “natural”, “responsibly sourced,” “differentiated,” or “certified”. But spoiler alert: it is still heavily polluting and emitting methane.
We cannot solve the climate crisis if we let fossil fuel companies monitor themselves their emissions and methane pollution. We cannot solve the climate crisis if we let fossil fuel companies lie to us. We cannot solve the climate if we do not phase out fossil fuels.

This report is a wake-up call that much more work is needed to ensure the integrity of emission reporting across the fossil fuel sector!

@gorffly_mokua It is and it really shows that fossil fuel companies are not to be trusted. Policymakers need to intervene to 1- phase out fossil fuels; 2- prevent such methane leakage in the meantime
