IKEA is making impressive strides with its strengthened climate agenda, “Net Zero and Beyond,” aligning with the latest climate science to tackle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated IKEA’s ambitious net-zero targets, which encompass the entire value chain. This updated agenda, replacing the previous Climate Positive initiative, marks a significant commitment to limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C by drastically reducing emissions across all operations.
The updated climate goals, now verified by SBTi, aim to cut absolute GHG emissions by 50% by FY30 compared to FY16 levels and achieve net-zero emissions by FY50. These targets cover all aspects of the IKEA value chain, from raw material sourcing to product end-of-life. IKEA’s proactive approach to climate action demonstrates a clear understanding of the need for science-based goals and actions to meet these ambitious targets.
Since setting its initial science-based targets in 2018, IKEA has already reduced emissions by 22%. The updated agenda not only emphasizes reducing emissions but also focuses on removing and storing carbon through responsible sourcing and forestry. This approach ensures that carbon is managed within the IKEA value chain, avoiding reliance on carbon offsets and addressing the root causes of emissions directly.
Furthermore, IKEA is committed to contributing to broader societal climate goals. The company plans to extend its efforts beyond its own operations, advocating for climate policies aligned with scientific recommendations. Pär Stenmark, Chief Sustainability Officer, highlights that achieving net-zero emissions is both an environmental and a social imperative, and IKEA is dedicated to collaborating with others to foster a just and resilient transition for all.
