Starting in October 2024, an electric hydrofoil ferry will operate on a six-month trial as a commuter service between Klara Mälarstrand and Tappström on Ekerö. This marks the world’s first electric hydrofoil passenger ferry to be tested in public transit, representing a groundbreaking step toward sustainable waterborne transportation.
The hydrofoil ferry (manufactured by @Candela_Technology) is not only fast but also highly energy-efficient, powered entirely by electricity. Its innovative design reduces energy consumption by approximately 80% compared to traditional vessels of similar size. Moreover, the ferry generates minimal wake when in motion, protecting the natural environment and wildlife while ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride for passengers.
This project is a collaborative effort involving Storstockholm's local transit authority (SL), the ferry manufacturer Candela Technology, and the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). The aim is to explore new solutions for rapid, emission-free passenger ferries that contribute to the future of sustainable maritime transit.
The ferry will be tested in passenger service from October to December 2024, and again from April to August 2025, providing valuable insights into the potential of this innovative technology to transform urban water transportation.
