Spain proposes improved 2030 climate target

In an effort to resolve the first climate-related legal dispute in the nation, the Spanish government has suggested setting a target to reduce national emissions.
Yesterday, it released a draft of an updated energy and climate strategy, toughening the 2030 emissions target from the previous 23% to the new 32% compared to 1990.
Additionally, it has new policies to promote green hydrogen and biomethane as well as harsher targets for boosting energy efficiency and renewables.
Campaigners disagree, claiming that this is not ambitious enough and does not reflect a "fair share" of the nation's global climate change obligation. They demand a minimum of 55%.
In 2020, Greenpeace Espana, Ecologistas en Acción, and Oxfam Spain filed a lawsuit against the government to demand that it establish a national climate and energy plan that would last until the end of 2030. By the end of 2019, the EU regulation needed such a plan.
Spain agreed to a long-term decarbonization strategy and established its first climate law, which included a net zero target for 2050, while the matter was still before the courts. In March 2021, it also gave final approval to a national energy and climate plan.
Campaigners revised their assertion that the plan existed, stating that it "represented an important advance compared to the policies."
