Environmental group bashes BLM for approving Faraday Copper’s unlawful mining project

Centre for Biological Diversity, an environmental group, is fighting against the approval given by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to drill 11 sites near Tuscon for copper claiming that it goes against federal policy. Faraday Copper, a Canadian mining company, is proposing a multi-pit copper mine on a stretch of federal, state and private land in the Galiero mountains northeast of Tucson. Russ McSpadden, southwest conservation advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity, says, “They violated their own statutory mandates and regulations, they violated the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act and they failed at their duty to consult with tribes.”
The environmental group wrote a letter to agency leaders in Arizona claiming that the mining project is unlawful as it has been approved at the same time when another environmental impact assessment is still ongoing. This assessment is being conducted to check if the mining project complies with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Since some of the sites approved by the BLM are still being assessed by the NEPA, approval for the mining project is unlawful. Learn more about the mining project:

It's really worrying to see these clashes between mining interests and environmental groups.

This is outrageous! Drilling for copper near Tucson while another environmental impact assessment is happening is totally backwards.

Hats off to the Center for Biological Diversity on calling out such hynious acts to destroy our environment by reckless mining. It is sad that the Bureau of Land Management have allowed this drilling.

Great move!! Environmental groups play a crucial role in holding companies and government agencies accountable for their actions, and it's important to continue monitoring and addressing these issues.

It's troubling to see the Bureau of Land Management approve Faraday Copper’s mining project despite ongoing environmental reviews and without consulting tribes.

@princess_nel_268 It is concerning indeed. Proper environmental reviews & consultation with tribes are essential steps that should not be overlooked in such projects.👏👏

@gorffly_mokua it is saddening to see a regulation body give a blind eye to such a danger activities, it is high time BLM take their responsibilities seriously.
