Phyllis Omido receives Livelihood Award for protecting East African communities ' environmental and land rights.
Omido, known as "Mama Moshi or "Mother against smoke," is an influential Kenyan environmental activist. She began her activism after being affected by a toxic battery smelting plant, leading to the closure of the plant and many others in Kenya. She used legal action and advocacy to establish environmental rights.
Omido now leads a network of grassroots Land and Environmental Defenders across East Africa, empowering them to protect their communities. She's campaigning against nuclear power development in Kenya, advocating for renewables to protect the environment and local livelihoods.
She received the Right Livelihood Award for her groundbreaking work in securing land and environmental rights and providing hope to communities facing similar challenges worldwide.
