Kenya's rail operator says floods, landslide disrupting its services from port city

Heavy rainfall experienced in Kenya has resulted to flooding and landslides in the coastal areas that has now resulted to delays in port operations in Mombasa. To make matters worse this heavy downpour has caused atleast 46 fatalities in Kenya and still counting. in Kenya's coastal region has resulted in delays in delivering cargo to and from the port city of Mombasa, the state-owned rail operator said on Saturday. Furthermore a landslide on the railway route between Nairobi and Mombasa has forced Kenya Railways to close all cargo services. This is a big blow as this route was used to transport cargo to other nations in East Africa including: Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan. As reported by Reuters, data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics showed its standard gauge railway hauled 6 million metric tons of cargo last year, from 5.4 million a year earlier. It highlights the challenges faced by infrastructure in the face of natural disasters. It is important for authorities to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of passengers and employees while also working towards restoring the services as soon as possible.
