Marsabit County has been facing drought for most of this year, causing starvation among residents. However, heavy rainfall has now resulted in severe flooding, causing the death of two people. A 70-year-old man from Loglogo location's Lbaarok area was swept away by the floods as he slept, and a six-year-old girl drowned after falling into a ditch filled with run-off water in Marsabit town's Old Town area.
The flooding has caused displacement in some areas, with about 500 people exposed to relocation and eight households completely destroyed. The affected families urgently require food, shelter, and clothing assistance. County commissioner Nobert Komora has ordered public administrators to sensitize residents about the forecasted heavy rains and encourage those living in lower grounds to evacuate to safer areas to prevent further loss of lives and property.

The Government should focus on multiple possible adaptations to floods that reduce the risk or increase resilience to flooding when it occurs.

It is truly unfortunate to see the people of Marsabit County facing such challenging circumstances, first with drought and now with flooding. The loss of lives and displacement of families is deeply saddening. It is important for local authorities and communities to work together to provide immediate assistance and support to those affected. This situation highlights the importance of preparedness and early warning systems to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
