Pachama at COP27: "We're building technology to evaluate the carbon stored in our forests and monitor forest change."

Companies are eager to invest in nature-based solutions but historically it has been challenging to understand the impact of a carbon project and feel confident in the accuracy of its emissions reductions. We want to help address this – using remote sensing and machine learning, we offer more precise and frequent insight into project performance. And we know that climate benefits are not the only factor in forest projects. They also benefit local communities and support biodiversity. We help businesses understand the project’s full story, including these impacts beyond carbon.
After evaluating more than 150 forest carbon projects globally and advancing our technology along the way, we are now working directly with project developers and landowners to start projects from the ground up. This next generation of projects, known as Pachama Originals, uses remote sensing technology every step of the way, from identifying land with the highest potential to tracking progress in real-time and identifying early risks. We then help find mission-aligned buyers for these projects unlocking catalytic financing at the earliest stages of project development.
During the UN climate conference COP27, Pachama participated in the COP27 Climate Hub, an on-site and digital broadcast hosted by We Don’t Have Time from Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. Cindy Chiang, Carbon Solutions Lead at Pachama, joined the broadcast from Sharm El-Sheikh to discuss Pachama’s satellite technology and how communicating precise forest data benefits both local communities and businesses.
The opportunity to attend COP27 and amplify the critical importance of restoring nature to address climate change was not lost on us. This global stage offered the unique chance to connect with other climate action trailblazers and breathe life into the story of Pachama’s forest projects.
Part of the challenge that I think we’re all facing is: How do we tell the story of the amazing, multiple impacts that these projects are having, and how do we use data to do that? How do we visualize the data to show what’s happening in real-time so that you can share it with your stakeholders?”, said Cindy Chiang.
