Scotland first to ban environmentally harmful anaesthetic

Desflurane gas has a global warming potential 2,500 times greater than carbon dioxide, NHS data suggests.

According to NHS data, the gas, which is used to keep patients unconscious during surgery, has a global warming potential 2,500 times larger than carbon dioxide. Banning it in Scotland - from its peak use in 2017 - would eliminate emissions equal to powering 1,700 houses a year. Hospital in the United Kingdom have already made cuts.
More than 40 hospital trusts in England and a number of hospitals in Wales have discontinued using it in recent years. NHS England will implement a similar restriction in 2024, which, like Scotland, will prohibit its use except in rare circumstances. According to an NHS review of desflurane use in 2020, banning it throughout NHS hospitals in England would reduce harmful emissions equivalent to powering 11,000 houses each year.
