Fossil-Free Sweden’s Mission Extended: A Win for Climate Action Amid Government Hesitation

Image of post in post detailed view

Three weeks before the deadline, the Swedish government finally decided to extend Fossil-Free Sweden's mission by two years. This decision, far from guaranteed, was made possible thanks to strong support from businesses and organizations, including a pivotal debate article co-authored by Mattias Goldmann, 2030-sekretariatet, Nina Ekelund, Hagainitiativet, Ingmar Rentzhog, We Don’t Have Time, Johan Falk, Exponential Roadmap

Romina, who has had limited success in advancing climate policy within the government, finally managed to contribute to this important decision.

The renewed mission includes a new focus: increasing demand for fossil-free products and services—a critical step to implementing the 23 industry roadmaps for fossil-free competitiveness. Under the leadership of National Coordinator Svante Axelsson, Fossil-Free Sweden will continue accelerating the pace of industrial climate transformation.

Axelsson emphasized the importance of predictable demand, particularly from public procurement, to drive fossil-free solutions. Swedish companies are ready with electrified and fossil-free innovations but need long-term and unified demand signals from both public and private sectors to scale up and standardize these solutions.

The First Movers Coalition and similar initiatives highlight the potential of leveraging collective buying power to promote climate-smart technologies. By aligning public and private demand, Sweden can create the necessary conditions to make fossil-free the new normal.

“Procurement is key to providing businesses with the boost they need to scale up, ensuring fossil-free products and services reach price parity with fossil-based alternatives,” said Svante Axelsson.

Fossil-Free Sweden's efforts, such as the Climate Leader Municipalities project, have already demonstrated success. For example, Ă–stersund municipality launched Sweden's first emissions-free construction site, inspiring at least nine other municipalities to follow suit.

“If more procurers adopt this approach, Swedish companies will gain a decisive advantage in the global market. But we need to act now,” Axelsson concluded.

This is a great win. I know story of Ă–stersund municipality, and its fantastic to hear their efforts encouraged at least 9 other municipalities to follow suit.

It is time to prioritize the issue of climate change as the effects are severe.

Epic win for Stockholm and all thanks to the WDHT CEO with other business partners in publishing an article to push the govt to commit to pushing Sweden's fossil free mission by two years.
