BHP faces $47 billion UK lawsuit over Brazilian dam collapse

BHP is facing a lawsuit against the people of Brazil after the collapse of Mariana dam in 2015 , which is considered one of the most catastrophic environmental disaster.

More than 600,000 Brazilians, 46 local governments, and around 2,000 businesses are seeking 36 billion pounds in damages as claimants after the collapse of the dam in southeastern Brazil, which was owned and operated by BHP and Vale's.

Believe it or not the dam claimed the lives of 19 people and left thousands homeless. This catastrophe also flooded forests, and polluted the length of the Doce River – which is considered to be sacred by the Krenak indigenous tribe.

BHP, the world's biggest miner by market value, on their part says nearly $8 billion has already been paid to those affected by the disaster through the Renova Foundation, which was established in 2016. The Brazilian government is discussing a nearly $30 billion compensation deal with BHP, Vale and Samarco, the miners said on Friday.

Indeed this is a cry for justice and the courts must serve justice to those that pursue it. It is saddening to see giant companies making mega profits while the communities around their industries are suffering.

This disaster, one of Brazil’s worst environmental catastrophes, released toxic sludge into the Doce River, causing widespread environmental and public health crises.

Holding corporations accountable is essential to ensure they prioritize safety and sustainability over profits. Justice for the affected is crucial for rebuilding lives and restoring ecosystems.

These giants should pay heavily and compensate for the destruction, damage, deaths and loss of diversity not forgetting the stress and mental anguish they caused.
