Coming up with stupid excuses for not switching to EVs in car racing

Image of post in post detailed view

The Swedish Automobile Sports Federation (Svenska Bilsportförbundet) don’t want to see electric cars in their racing series.
The reason: EVs are too quiet.
”A silent car on a snowy winter road can be dangerous, since the audience is sometimes standing very close to the road”, says Pernilla Karlsson, chairman of the federation’s environmental committee, in an interview in the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.
Well, Pernilla (and the rest of the environmental committee). Here are two super simple solutions to the so-called problem:
1. Move the audience further away from the roads (which will also increase public safety)
2. Add artificial motor noise to the cars. There are already functional up-and-running solutions for this.
I am getting sick and tired of people who choose to see problems instead of solutions, and who cling on to yesterdays polluting technologies for dear life, while pretending to work for a better environment.

I, Pernilla Karlsson, have been informed that you have read the article published in Dagens Nyheter (2023-02-10) regarding our environmental work within Svensk Bilsport. I have also read what you have written about electric cars in car racing and then mainly in rallying. It is a bit sad to have a slightly high tone based on the fact that someone just seems to have read a headline, but we welcome all input that can make the development go faster towards fossil-free and increased biodiversity. It was unfortunate that the headline didn't really reflect the article. DN chose a negative slant in the headline, unfortunately, and we understand that it can be misinterpreted. In any case, Svensk Bilsport wants to respond to what is being put forward when environmental and climate issues are so important. The complainant claims that the Swedish Car Sports Federation does not want electric cars, which of course is completely taken out of thin air, as we are constantly trying to reduce emissions and get better. The federation naturally welcomes the development towards electric power as it is important in the association's goal of fossil-free by 2030. Below are some examples of important steps regarding electrification: - From 2023 the STCC will be the world's first 100% electric national touring car championship, while city racing is making a comeback in the championship calendar. - The NXT Gen Cup is the world’s first 100% electric junior touring car cup where the official Swedish Junior Champion will be crowned in 2023. ABB E-mobility, the official charging partner of NXT Gen Cup, will provide a bespoke and sustainable solution for charging at race weekends without being dependent of existing infrastructure or utilising generators. - The first ever Swedish E-Kart Championship took place at the GTR Motorpark (Green Track Resort) in Eskilstuna in August to crown the 2022 champions in the Rotax E20 Junior and Senior classes. Emissions were minimized using a Battery Box power storage unit (peak limiting) which was charged from the normal grid over 24 hours and draw the power we needed for the karts during the day. The criticism made did not touch on what the article was about, which focused on our broad environmental work in car racing and on our tracks where we must constantly try to improve. The article also addressed how we work with enhancing biodiversity and also future development regarding fossil-free fuels and we try to help clubs to be strengthened by gaining more knowledge regarding greener technologies. The article was also about how important it is that we should be able to see a future for motorsport and then of course it also includes electric cars. We see great opportunities in our sports to contribute to a long-term sustainable society, including by driving a greener technology development. Competing often gives technology leaps in the business the competition is about. Technology leaps that are then quickly introduced even in standard cars and thus benefit society. To return to the main title of the article, it is thus quite misleading, as what I commented on was that in auto racing we must have a plan to implement electric cars in rallies that run on forest roads, among other things, and in this case also on snow-covered roads. If we do not have a plan for safety, it can become a risk because the car itself is quiet compared to a rally car that runs on regular fuel or fossil-free fuels. But of course, different technical solutions will contribute to high safety even with 100% electric. It is in car sports that many technologies are developed and of course we welcome the development of electric cars and it is an exciting future we have ahead of us, with both fossil-free fuels and electricity. *** While you're at it, since you seem a little interested in motorsport and the environment: Here's some bonus info as motor tracks actually often have a positive environmental impact regarding the other major environmental challenge besides climate, namely biodiversity. Did you know that motor tracks are often important for biodiversity and some have received nature conservation grants through county administrative boards and municipalities? This is based among other things that overgrowth is prevented around motorsport tracks. Motor tracks and other infrastructure biotopes have proven to be important resources for biodiversity, which is perhaps surprising to many. With more biologically adapted care, the species richness can also increase even more. Around our motortracks there are extensive areas of land that need to be cut for visibility / safety reasons. These surfaces are often therefore environmentally valuable meadowlands with high biodiversity. See https://lona.naturvardsverket.se/ and search "motorbana (in Swedish)" to see a number of nature conservation projects on motor tracks around Sweden. This is a form of "free/cheap nature conservation" our sports movement provides in terms of, among other things, preventing overgrowth, which otherwise society will have to pay for. And national resources, unfortunately, are not often available for nature conservation. In collaboration with Svemo and FIM (the international motorcycle federation), Svensk Bilsport participates and contributes in a scientific study that summarizes previous studies that all show that motor tracks contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. We are happy to share these reports when they are ready. Part of this is the visits made to Svensk Bilsports clubs regarding the club activities' opportunities to contribute to the conservation and development of biodiversity. A study in 2022 also showed the benefits of motor tracks for biodiversity, it will soon be released on our website. *** And a little bit more about our sporting federation and sports in general, maybe some people never visited a motorsport track/race? The driving force of sport is the joy and community in the group or team, the challenge and nerve of the competition, the feeling of breaking boundaries and reaching goals - and the well-being of training. At the same time, sports provide added value for society, which includes so much more than a fun leisure activity. The sports movement wants to be a central piece of the puzzle in a sustainable society. The sports movement does and wants to continue doing even more to contribute to healthy social development. Often the sports association is the engine and the glue that binds together smaller communities and residential areas. // Pernilla Karlsson

Hi Pernilla at @bilsportforbundet. Thanks for replying to my climate review, and for highlighting the climate goals and sustainability work of Svensk Bilsport. I really appreciate that. However, you are not being quite honest in your sweeping criticism of my review. it was not the headline that enticed me to write this climate warning, but a direct quote from you. ”A silent car on a snowy winter road can be dangerous, since the audience sometimes stands very close to the road.” This is simply not a valid argument for not allowing EV’s in certain rallies. Why? Because it is a problem that could be fixed in no time. There are indeed climate problems that are very costly and complicated to fix. Making an EV roar is not one of them. But it is enough said on that topic. I wish you all the best of luck in turning Swedish motorsport into a sustainable attraction!

Am a motor sport fan and i know this is the main concern in the motor sport industry that is been raised as the dialogue of transition to electric cars is taking place. However, the study by penns state college of enegineering has proved that with the sound additive technology the sound from the cars which makes the game fun and gurantees safety of fans. There is no excuse in transtion to electric cars in the motor sport industry for a habitable environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfkOl4WSiXA

They go round the world in 4 continents and in more than 10 countries. Spreading and polluting the environment. They use aeroplanes to travel use private jets to ship their rally vehicles. They should switch to EV and show the world its achievable
