Scottish government accused of missing deadlines to take action on overfishing and effects of climate breakdown
The Scottish government has been called out by protesters for failure to meet deadlines in taking action on overfishing and its effects to the environment. This is now posing danger to the fragile marine life in the coastal regions in Scotland.
According to Marine Conservation Society and the National Trust for Scotland the ministers in Edinburgh are scalling back the plan to protect marine areas in England for their repeated behaviour to miss this crucial deadlines to protect vulnerable marine life.
On their part , Open seas(a campaign group) , said ministers are delaying action to protect priority marine features such as flame shell reefs found outside the marine protection areas. Only 46 of 233 designated sites have all their protected features in favourable or recovering condition, and many have not been surveyed.
The charities now have advised the government to restrict fisheries inside MPAs by 2025; deploy more fishery protection vessels to police and deter illegal fishing; to set legal targets to improve damaged marine features; and introduce surveillance and tagging of all fishing vessels.
This comes after Scotland backed down on a climate target set for 2030 which was a result of Scotland moving out of the Bute House agreement a month ago.
This action paints a bad picture about Scotland and poses a great danger to the marine life. Even as the Scottish fishers say marine protection plans will wreck coastal communities, the government must strike a biodiversity balance and purpose to save the endangered species.
