The oil and gas sector will not voluntarily transition

The oil and gas sector will not voluntarily transition as seems likely from the “GodPod” revelations courtesy Greenpeace and the recent statement by an oil and gas CEO possibly implying non-compliance with a court order or perhaps contempt, subject to legal challenge. We are now aware that the oil and gas sector has already set a target for continued growth until at least 2030 despite having identified the climate change problem over 30 years ago and has taken little if any meaningful action or intends to. The increasingly worrying rapid deterioration of our climate has increased intensity of extreme weather events as, the northern jet stream establishes longer term stable sine wave stability shown by decadal droughts, severe flooding and intensive/ extensive wildfires, as well as for example at least 30%+ global crop land degradation and erosion – exacerbated and accelerated by unsustainable intensive farming techniques. The oil and gas sector manipulate or lobby (depending on yr viewpoint) our politicians, laws, international treaties and financial systems for "legitimate" commercial gain that generously rewards their executives, stockholders and supporters (See link). To those of us that are cocooned by consumerism and increasing mega-monopolies spurred on by trickledown economics and corrupted governance, this seems unreal as our own species unleashes a second (some might say ongoing) wave of corporate colonialism, often led by expelling (e.g. burning down their homes in the Amazon) or inflicting genocide and economic dependency (sometimes known as modern slavery) on indigenous peoples so that their unspoiled lands and resources that have been lived on, sustainably nurtured and protected for thousands of years, can be exploited. It is like a small number of us have declared war on the rest of us, despite the fact that no one can win with the sixth mass extinction likely to be mopping up remaining un-adapted species within a hundred or less years as global temperatures continue to soar and the insane business as usual mentality remains. One truth from the oil and gas sector is that with transition (to be clear that is the setting plans, targets and deadlines to cease extraction of oil and gas) things will get worse for all of us and we will have to learn or adapt to do many things we currently take for granted. There are many commentators and groups that believe the economic system will likely collapse without a response at global level that will need significant changes and action at scale. Whilst the currently Democrat controlled US Government seems to have latched on to the downside of trickledown economics, this could be threatened by a possible second “Coup 4 2” terms in the White House by the Ex Pres Trump (I was was just thinking you can't make this up - Oh yes you can or anyone else for that matter. Sorry for the satirical play on words from a song – My Coo ca Choo, Alvin Stardust 1973). Transition was never going to be easy, but it is going to be a lot worse because of the deliberate 30-year now 40 year delay orchestrated by the oil and gas sector. To paraphrase the title of a film featuring Al Gore (2006), climate change is an “inconvenient truth” and we have no choice but to deal with this now. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/29/shell-raises-dividend-soaring-oil-prices

When I refer to a few of us I am talking in terms of humanity as a whole of which we are all members. I choose my words as carefully as I can - this is how this works for me!
