communities come together to demand coastal reserves

Despite the pervasive challenges and damage inflicted upon oceans worldwide by activities such as illegal fishing, pollution, and industrialization, there is hope and resilience among small-scale fishing communities. On World Fisheries Day, communities from Indonesia, Thailand, and Senegal are actively engaging with their governments, demanding urgent action to protect coastal waters. They are specifically advocating for larger and more effective marine reserves, and encouraging governments to sign and ratify the Global Oceans Treaty.

Rather than being passive victims, these communities are taking proactive steps. Through initiatives like constructing artificial coral reefs using sustainable materials and monitoring for illegal activities, they are actively contributing to the restoration and protection of marine ecosystems. Additionally, their efforts extend to legal action, exemplified by the community of Sangihe Island, which successfully brought their case to the Supreme Court.

These communities are not solely relying on authorities but are taking matters into their own hands to combat overfishing and environmental degradation. Their commitment to traditional and sustainable fishing methods demonstrates a strong desire to maintain the delicate balance between their livelihoods, cultural practices, and the health of the oceans. While facing considerable threats, these communities embody the resilience and determination needed to safeguard the oceans for future generations. Greenpeace's video release serves as a testament to these inspiring efforts on World Fisheries Day.
