Reduce Meat and dairy promotion

Dear EU Commision. Europe needs to reduce its production and promotion of animal products, especially beef and dairy. We all have to be responsible for our planet and change our behaviour- there are loads of healthy, tasty and cheap ways to enjoy plant based meals. We have to reduce our consumption of meat and everyone has to acknowledge this and act on it. A reduction to 3 times a week being plant based days would have a significant impact. No one is saying we must all be vegan, but we can all make better choices and reduce our consumption of animal products especially beef and dairy. Animal agriculture is responsible for 38% of emissions. If you think stopping fossil fuels alonr will solve climate change then you need to do more research. Exploring vegetables and pulses is not a "sacrifice " it can be so enjoyable- curries are a great place to start. It is cheaper - €1.50 - €2.00 for 500gms of chickpeas or lentils!! Also find out about nutrition- less animal products is less fat.. Take responsibility and reduce meat promotion and production for everyone on the planet. https://www.euronews.com/2023/07/12/why-is-reporting-on-the-climate-impact-of-meat-off-the-menu

People should substitute animal protein with plant protein.

        Insects agriculture may help.

@Jules I agree but it's very hard to market insect protein and make it appealing. Plant proteins are very good! Where do you suppose cattle get their protein from...they don't eat meat.

@lucinda_ramsay but because of cellulose vegetal proteins are hard to collect for our Human digestive system. It's not impossible... Cooking or pre-digestion helps but the ratio protein digested for protein undigested is still not really as we would want for a balanced diet. That's why cow get in symbiosis with bacteria in there stomach to actually get the amount of proteins and nutrients in the proper amount for there diet. This symbiosis is allowed because the stomach of the cow has evolved to get perfect condition for hosting thos specific bacteria which produces the enzymes that can digest cellulose. For rabbits or dears it's actually the caecum not the stomach which digest cellulose. But it's the same principle, their bacterias in there that do the digestion job. So yeah interestingly, Mammals actually don't digest cellulose which is around every cells of a plant... it's bacteria that do it for them.

@lucinda_ramsay appeal is just a question of mindset.

@lucinda_ramsay and of which kind of bacteria you get in symbiosis with xD

@lucinda_ramsay welcome to biology. It's like physics... There's laws that are above us all. .

@lucinda_ramsay fun fact for every kg of of insects there's 2kg of food. But for every kg of cattle there's 8kg of food. So even for the economy, for the food chain, for the seeking of a proper diet and for the environment it's more than advantageous to us to switch to insects. And it will diminish the quantity of lands that are over exploited for cattles diet. And we can give those surplus to Nature in a context of climate change it's more than necessary.

@Jules true though it needs alot of research and educating people about it.

@Jules cellulose is fibre which is why a more plant based diet is much healthier if using plants and not artificial meat alternatives (which have their place in moderation).I was a whole food chef for 10 years and I also studied biology and physiology at degree level😉. Pulse+wholegrain rice =complete protein. Quinoa is also extremely high in protein as are nuts. Cows have 4 stomachs to break down grasses, which we don't eat my comment abou cows getting protein was at a common misconception that meat is necessary for protein and milk is necessary for calcium-neither of these arguments are true.B12 is derived from the metabolism of bacteria in animals and this is something that can be difficult to find however nutritional yeast is one source..but that's only if someone is not eating meat. I advocate for a reduction in eating meat -vegan is the ultimate but a lot of people don't know enough about nutrition and cooking- or just dont have the time or interest. Insects are great- I've had insect burgers myself and they were absolutely fine and my burger was tasty but I don't think the mind shift will happen ...and again watch out for right wing conspiracy theorists with insects they'll be saying it's some kind of government agenda😂 as if saving the planet isn't a good agenda. Thanks Jules for the chat.
