UN expert ‘alarmed’ by UK politicians’ attacks on green protesters

Michel Forst, the U.N.’s special rapporteur on environmental defenders, said he had been left “alarmed” and “distressed” by a fact-finding mission to the U.K. earlier this month, citing “increasingly severe crackdowns” on the right to peaceful protest and widespread derision of “environmental defenders” by “the media and political figures.” Forst recorded his worries as he revealed that a severe crackdown on green protesters in Britain by police is extremely with excessive force and much restrictions on courtroom evidence. He has called out the UK government saying that this is going to have a negative impact on fundamental freedoms and highten climate change effects. As the world faces a triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, environmental protesters were acting for the “benefit of us all” and must be protected, Michel Forst, the UN special rapporteur on environmental defenders, said on Tuesday. Further, Forst says that the rules imposed on defendants in Inner London crown court, peaceful protesters have been forbidden by court order from mentioning the climate crisis, fuel poverty or even the US civil rights movement in their statements to the jury. “It is very difficult to understand what could justify denying the jury the opportunity to hear the reason for the defendant’s action, and how a jury could reach a properly informed decision without hearing it, in particular at the time of environmental defenders’ peaceful but ever more urgent calls for the government to take pressing action for the climate,” Forst said. This is so brave of the UN special rapporteur Michel Forst for calling out the UK government for ignoring the cry of climate justice defenders. The UK government must be ashamed of this new rules and regulations that bars freedom of green protesters especially at a time when they've failed as a government to hit their climate targets as they had promised. This is heartbreaking to hear. The right to peaceful protest is a fundamental aspect of democracy and should be protected. Environmental defenders play a crucial role in advocating for the planet and should not face derision for their efforts.

The UK legal justification for blocking defendants from stating their case is in no way “justice “; it’s state-sponsored miscarriage of justice
