#BuyMoreTime: Fixing Methane Releases in Fossil Fuel Production

Welcome to another edition in our series of articles about the importance of tackling methane and other short-lived climate pollutants now. The world is not on track to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, but by focusing on these super pollutants, we can #BuyMoreTime to stabilize the climate.

Discussion highlights

Scope of the problem
Methane leaks during fossil fuel production and transport are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing these emissions by 75% by 2030 is critical to meeting Paris Agreement targets.

Need for Regulation
Satellite data reveals significant underreporting of methane emissions, emphasizing the necessity of stricter regulations and global measures, such as banning fuel sales from producers with uncontrolled emissions. The oil and gas industry is unlikely to address methane emissions voluntarily. Proven technologies and regulatory frameworks, like those in the European Union, are effective solutions.

Urgency of Action
Reducing methane emissions is a practical and vital step in combating climate change, requiring immediate action by policymakers. Progress requires joint efforts from governments, industries, and the financial sector, supported by improved emission monitoring systems.
