40% of the world's shipping is solely used to transport fossil fuels This number feels absolutely crazy, but it's also true, and as crazy as it sounds, knowing this makes me think of a more positive future. Why ? Because we know that the use of renewables for energy generation are hitting a tipping point where they will dramatically reduce the demand for oil and coal across the world, and that reduction in demand will not only reduce the amount of CO2 emissions generated directly by the burning of fossil fuel, it will also reduce the need for transportation, which will in itself reduce the amount of oil required by transport ships, etc. This snowball effect has the power to send the world into a virtuous cycle of emissions reduction as well as improvement of marine ecosystems and more. So what do we need to do now ? We simply need to accelerate the growth of renewable energy so we can reach that tipping point faster and faster.
