Winning gold for 'most impressive skills' at this year's Ocean Olympics is the Epaulette Shark, our #OceanAnimalOfTheMonth for August 🦈🚶🥇
Having mastered the art of 'walking', these fascinating creatures use their paddle-shaped fins to navigate the tidal pools and reef flats of Australia and New Guinea. They can also endure low oxygen levels and higher water temperatures, which helps them to forage in areas inaccessible to other predators.
Measuring about 1 metre in length, they're easily recognisable by the large black spot encircled in white on each side of their body. This spot resembles an epaulette – a decorative shoulder piece on military uniforms – which is how they got their name.
Fast facts about the Epaulette Shark:
🌙 Most active at dusk and dawn
🦐 Diet includes worms, small fish, and crustaceans
🌊 Typically found in waters no deeper than 40 metres
