South Africa Urgently Needs Action on Green Promises Previously Agreed Upon.

As South Africa gears up for the upcoming elections, the anticipation lingers: Will the promises of a "just energy transition" finally materialize? Two and a half years ago, amidst the grandeur of the COP26 climate summit, South Africa forged a groundbreaking agreement with wealthier nations to usher in a clean energy era, replacing coal with equitable solutions. President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the $8.5 billion “Just Energy Transition Partnership” (JETP) as a pivotal moment, echoed by global leaders as a game-changer. However, as the nation stands on the cusp of political transformation, the reality on the ground falls short of expectations. Progress towards this energy transition remains sluggish, hindered by debt concerns and debates over the role of gas. Despite the enthusiasm, only a fraction of the promised funds have been directed towards implementation, leaving coal-dependent regions like Mpumalanga in a state of flux. In this pivotal moment, it's imperative for President Ramaphosa to not just make green promises, but to ensure their execution for the collective benefit of all South Africans. Whether retaining his seat in the upcoming election or not, his legacy must be one of laying sturdy foundations for sustainable initiatives that transcend political timelines. The challenges are evident: Eskom’s hesitance to take on additional debt, disagreements over the role of gas, and the lingering specter of unreliable electricity supply. Yet, amidst these obstacles, opportunities emerge. The recent approval of progressive legislation signals a shift towards a competitive power market, potentially diluting the dominance of coal. The town of Komati serves as a poignant reminder of the stakes involved. Its transformation from a coal hub to a renewable energy and agricultural center only goes to show the urgency of inclusive and timely action. Delayed consultations left communities in limbo, highlighting the need for proactive engagement and swift implementation of transition plans. As South Africa navigates this critical juncture, the world watches closely. The JETP holds the promise of not just reducing emissions, but also addressing health and economic disparities inherent in coal reliance. It's a call to action for President Ramaphosa to translate rhetoric into reality, ensuring that South Africa paves the way for a greener, more equitable future.
