In September 2024, the area of Peru next to Ecuador asked the national government to announce a state of emergency in the regions of Jaén and San Ignacio due to seven ongoing wildfires. These fires have already destroyed 2,599 hectares. Climate change, droughts, and strong winds are causing the spread. Throughout the country, 173 fires have been reported, with 1,057 fires since 2021, resulting in six deaths and 59 injuries.
