EPA approved fuel ingredient with sky-high lifetime cancer risk

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved a component of boat fuel made from discarded plastic despite its own risk formula indicating that the substance poses an extremely high cancer risk. The EPA scientists determined that exposure to this boat fuel ingredient over a lifetime could result in cancer for every individual. The risk level is a million times higher than what the agency typically considers acceptable for new chemicals and six times worse than the risk of lung cancer from a lifetime of smoking. Federal law requires the EPA to conduct safety reviews for new chemical products and, if they pose unreasonable health or environmental risks, the EPA must find ways to mitigate those risks before approval. However, in this case, the EPA did not take adequate measures to address the risk and allowed Chevron to produce the new boat fuel ingredient at its refinery. ProPublica and the Guardian obtained a 203-page risk assessment, revealing the high cancer risk associated with this boat fuel, which is far higher than previously disclosed.
