In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, improving the health and well-being of citizens has become more important than ever. In this Urban Insight report, engineers and architects come together to offer a vision of how to achieve an inviting, healthy and enjoyable urban environment.
The latest Urban Insight report “Healthy buildings, cities and you” places our buildings and city environments under the microscope in a way we have rarely seen before. We ask, how can our cities help us to lead healthier and happier lives? On average, 90% of our lifetime is spent indoors. People living in cities are 20% more likely to suffer from depression and, shockingly, more than 1.6 million lives are lost each year due to noise pollution, which is the second biggest environmental health risk in Europe after air pollution.
How do the environment and human activities affect human health, both mental and physical? What can cities do to design urban areas and buildings to help improve human health and happiness? What can we expect of the development of environmental pollution in the future? These are the questions this report seeks to answer. By looking at some of the important factors affecting our health – greenery, air, light, noise and movement – we can do much to incorporate health and well-being into urban living.
