Do you agree that seagrass, particularly Posidonia, is extremely important to protect the Mediterranean?
Another Wednesday where we take you to ocean places which you might be curious to understand. And which are part of our WE ARE OCEAN Global Program.
What about some posidonia? On Monday we talked about this beautiful topic in the framework of INTO THE OCEANIC in Scotland. Today we bring you to warmer temperatures: The Mediterranean!
The Mediterranean seagrass is called Posidonia and many research institutes and also artists work on this.
Today we “borrow” the text from the @savetheposidoniaproject:
“Oceanic Posidonia
Oceanic Posidonia is a marine plant, and not an alga, which has root, stem, leaves, fruits and flowers. It forms meadows between the surface and the 40 meters of depth in waters of great quality like those of Formentera. It is an endemic species in the Mediterranean and, since 1999 specifically the meadow of the Natural Park of Ses Salines d'Eivissa and Formentera was declared a World Heritage Site.
Posidonia Posidonia represents one of the most important natural values of the island (Formentera), since it has an important function in sediment filtration thus giving a unique transparency, it contributes to maintain the quality and oxygenation of the submarine ecosystem where more than 400 species of marine plants and 1,000 species of marine animals are feeding and breeding; many of them used in the Balearic gastronomy and, finally, the Posidonia berms on the sand avoid beach erosion.
Extension of Posidonia
…..
The Balearic Islands have an extension of 55,795 hectares of Posidonia meadows, of which 7,650 hectares correspond to the waters of Formentera. This translates into 76.5 million square meters to protect only in Formentera..”
Please help us keep the Posidonia intact and support its reconstruction. We will keep you posted!

And together we've planted over 150,000 trees. One tree is planted for every climate review written to an organization that is Open for Climate Dialogue™.
How does this work?
