EU Parliament passes Nature Restoration Law amid political turmoil

Despite a tumultuous path marked by protests and political dissent, the European Parliament has approved the EU's nature restoration law with 329 votes in favour and 275 against. The legislation, which aims to restore 20% of EU land and maritime areas, faced fierce opposition from a coalition of centre-right, far-right, and national conservative lawmakers.

Initially proposed in 2022 to combat the degradation of Europe's ecosystems, the law encountered resistance in 2023, prompting compromises on ambition and timelines. However, after rigorous negotiations, the hollowed-out version of the law secured passage, much to the relief of proponents of environmental conservation.

Spanish centre-left lawmaker Cesar Luena, who led negotiations, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing that the Restoration Law is a critical step towards protecting nature.
The victory was met with enthusiasm from green lawmakers, with German MEP Michael Bloss hailing it as a blow to conservative forces.
However, the law's journey to approval was marred by last-minute opposition orchestrated by the centre-right, citing concerns over bureaucracy and its impact on farmers. Despite co-negotiating the law, EPP chief Manfred Weber criticized its drafting and opposed it on Tuesday.
The law sets specific targets for restoring various ecosystems, including pollinator populations, forest ecosystems, and river connectivity. However, concessions were made to address concerns related to agricultural ecosystems, with an "emergency stop" clause allowing for the suspension of targets under exceptional circumstances.
The new Nature Restoration is far from perfect, or complete, but the passing of this law is at least symbolic and a way to show the conservative parties that we won't accept their shameful decision of backing out at the last minute!

It's important for all nations to work together and hold accountable those who oppose or show indifference to such important efforts.

Is it wrong if other countries learn from EU? the answer is NO! This means that other states should embrace this and deal with those who try to put it down or seems to be nonchalant.

Why would anyone oppose such laws if not out of mere selfishness and greed? EU did the right thing

Thank heavens it made it through and got passed- this is a watered down version and the EU keeps making concessions to farmers - it's a big change to farming- but there won't be farming without it. We can't keep doing things the same way things have to change and this law will help.

It's so unfortunate that when some people are trying something good for the planet ...others won't rest untill they bring them down..it our responsibility as a whole to stand for what's right.

Its a great milestone for the EU. I am however alarmed by the level of opposition this law faced. Some people have just buried their heads in the sand on climate issues.
