Women are missing from both political leadership and business leadership. Looking at the heads of nations at the G7 in the UK this weekend it reminds us our leadership in its current form is not fit for purpose to see us out of the climate crisis we are facing: Women serve as Heads of State or Government in only 22 countries, and 119 countries have never had a woman leader. Only 7% of FTSE 100 companies had a female CEO. Of the FTSE 250 companies just 5, five, companies had a woman at the head of these businesses. Research shows overwhelmingly that when women are in leadership, not only are overall better results achieved, but, crucially now, better climate policies and policy implementation are achieved. Research shows we can add $12 trillion to the economy if we fill this current gap in diverse female leadership... and we can save the planet at the same time. Calling this 50:50 Vision, with men and women in co-leadership, we can successfully sail the choppy waters that lie just before us. New architects are needed to design the new systems and companies we urgently need for a sustainable future. These architects need to come in with fresh viewpoints, be unbiased and not afraid of taking difficult decisions. They must bring new attributes, like compassion and kindness and work holistically with the environment, other peoples and human and planetary health. The upcoming international climate negotiations and COP26 can only be a success if women are co-leading the delegations, starting with the host countries, and if NDCs have gender targets as well.
