Sun Cable Plan To Bring Solar Power To Singapore Is Back On

Sun Cable, formerly known as PowerLink, had an ambitious project to transmit solar power from Darwin, Australia, to Singapore via an undersea cable passing through Indonesian waters. Delays in obtaining Indonesian government approvals led to a dispute between Australian billionaires Mike Cannon-Brookes and Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest, who each owned 25% of the project. Consequently, the project entered voluntary receivership in January of the same year. The Northern Territory of Australia is seen as an ideal location for solar energy production due to its low population density and abundant sunshine. While both billionaires agreed on the potential of the Northern Territory for solar energy, they disagreed on the project's feasibility, with Forrest favoring green hydrogen and ammonia production over the undersea cable. Cannon-Brooks has since taken control of Sun Cable, invested AUS$65 million, and resumed talks with authorities in Singapore and Indonesia for a conditional energy import license. Negotiations are ongoing with Indonesia for permission to pass the undersea cable through its waters.
