The European Central Bank has announced it is currently developing climate indicators in order to better measure how climate change affects the financial sector and how it can participate in the transition. It intends to provide information on this subject, which still lacks reliable statistics.
Since the arrival of Christine Lagarde at its head, in 2019, the central bank has made the fight against global warming one of its major areas of development. In particular, it has increased the consideration of environmental issues in its monetary policy, and may even rebalance its own securities portfolios to improve their carbon footprint. Developing new indicators will help reduce the climate data gap and the lack of information on this topic, which is crucial to make further progress toward a climate-neutral economy.
