Government can sometimes be slow to act. Politics muddy the waters, meaning crises like climate change are often seen as problems for another day. Actions made by the EPA are no different - but recently, its attempts to limit emissions are bigger than ever.
.
Last month, the EPA created standards for cars and trucks that could eliminate 9 billion tons of carbon emissions by 2050. And just last week, the EPA made rules stating that if large power plants can't cut their emissions by 90% by 2050, they will be shut down. The measure would cut 600 million tons of carbon emissions in 40 years: practically double of the UK's annual emissions. With all of these changes (and more), in just a few short months, the EPA has made rules that could prevent almost half of the entire world's annual fossil fuel emissions!
.
The biggest thing to keep in mind: these decisions could still be overruled. Last year, many EPA crackdowns were overturned by the Supreme Court, severely limiting the agency's ability to curtail emissions. Something similar could happen this time around, and it widely depends on what comes from upcoming elections and public support of the measures.

EPAs laws and policies should be final and no one should have the authority to overturn them if we are to win the fight against climate crisis.
