Activist Investors Rally Against TotalEnergies' Climate Policy

At TotalEnergies' recent annual meeting, more than 30% of shareholders expressed dissatisfaction with the French oil group's current efforts to transition to cleaner energy. The gathering was marked by protests and confrontations between police and climate activists. A coalition of 17 institutional investors and Dutch activist shareholder group Follow This submitted a resolution, calling for TotalEnergies to accelerate its emission reduction plans by 2030. This significant display of investor dissent, surpassing 2020's 17% support for a similar proposal, aligns with increasing demands for faster transition initiatives from industry counterparts like Shell. Follow This specifically urged TotalEnergies to significantly reduce its Scope 3 emissions, which encompasses carbon emissions generated throughout a product's lifespan. As an initial measure, they proposed halting any new oil and gas projects. We extend our gratitude to the 17 institutional investors responsible for the climate resolution, as well as those who supported their initiative by voting in favor of the proposal. Acting as responsible guardians of the global economy, they have led the charge for environmental responsibility. These institutional investors, hailing from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US, manage €1.1 trillion in assets. The group includes Achmea Investment Management, ASR AM, Degroof Petercam AM, Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, La Banque Postale Asset Management & Tocqueville Finance, La Financière de l'Echiquier, Mandarine Gestion, Man Group, Meeschaert Asset Management, MESSIEURS HOTTINGUER ET CIE - GESTION PRIVEE, MN, Ofi Invest Asset Management, PGGM Investments, Sycomore Asset Management AM, and Sanso Investment Solutions.

We need stakeholders to take a strong stance on climate issues. This is commendable and I believe it adds pressure to corporations to prioritize climate issues.
