Day 619: World Rewilding Day. Today is the first World Rewilding Day, a day that raises awareness for the need to build back our ecosystems. While the day comes on the heels of the pandemic, "Build back better" didn't start with quarantines and viruses, the idea has been formulating for over a decade.
.
Rewilding is a term that is hard to define, primarily because it is used in many different contexts. It can cover everything from planting trees in deforested areas to reintroducing endangered animals to historic habitats. Because of its not-quite-concrete definition, it has caught some flack with experts, but the overall message is clear: undo the damage we've done.
.
Rewilding Britain, just one organization that aims to rewild pieces of the planet, is calling to rewild 30% of British land and seas by 2030. Projects include bringing back beavers, white tailed eagles, even pine martens. The country has already seen great successes in these projects, which will hopefully carry through the next decade to meet conservationists goals.
