EU: Truck exhaust emissions increase overnight: "It's common to be manipulated"

Measurement of emissions from trucks The measurements in the Cares project have been carried out from the side of the road or alternatively with following vehicles. Over 60 percent of the measured Euro 5 trucks had excessive emissions of nitrogen oxides during the day. At night, it increased to 100 percent. "It shows that it is common for trucks' exhaust gas treatment to be manipulated," says Åke Sjödin, emissions expert at IVL. IVL The Swedish Environmental Institute coordinates the European project Cares – City Air Remote Emission Sensing. The aim is to develop methods to monitor traffic's real emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides and particles. As part of the project, exhaust gas measurements of 250,000 vehicles – both cars and trucks – have been carried out in Milan, Italy, Prague, Czech Republic, and Krakow, Poland. The measurements have been made with measuring instruments, either from the side of the road or from a following car. "Exhaust gas treatment is manipulated" IVL particularly highlights the results from truck measurements as disappointing. 40 percent of the trucks with Euro class IV, V and VI had "suspected high" emissions of nitrogen oxides or emitted more than what is allowed. At night, it increased to 70 percent. For the Euro V trucks, the figure was 60 percent during the day and 100 percent at night. - The result is worrying. It shows that it is common for trucks' exhaust gas purification to be manipulated, for example by installing so-called emulators that simulate the effect of the diesel additive Adblue. With an Adblue emulator, the truck's purification of nitrogen oxides stops working completely, says Åke Sjödin, the project's coordinator and emissions expert at IVL, in a statement. Increased need for environmental control For light trucks and cars, tampering does not seem to be as common. But according to IVL, the emissions of nitrogen oxides and particles can be high even for relatively new vehicles. - It strengthens the need for improved environmental control of vehicles in traffic in the EU. Cars that are tampered with or do not work as they should account for a large part of the emissions and have a major negative impact on the air environment in cities. The fact that the cheating is so extensive also shows how important it is that we continue to work with controls - and that there are measures such as fines, says Åke Sjödin. https://www.nyteknik.se/fordon/lastbilars-avgasutslapp-okar-under-natten-vanligt-att-det-manipuleras/2056853 .

This is disappointing, EU have a responsibility to stop this.

This very disheartening and I expect the EU to ensure such things are taken care of
