Post 979: April 21st, 2022. Many large mammals, including big cats, elephants, and primates, are at some kind of risk of extinction. None are safe from the threats of poaching and deforestation, but one taxonomic family, as a whole, may be at the greatest risk.
.
Fact: All gibbon species except one are listed as either endangered or critically endangered. Even the species that is 'better off', isn't by much, and is still classified as vulnerable. Gibbons are under threat from demand in the wildlife trade and deforestation, but because of their highly localized populations, once they are gone in one area, they could be gone forever. And with high deforestation rates across many of their home countries (in Cambodia alone, it is estimated that 179 hectares of forest are lost each year), gibbons could be left with nowhere else to go.
