Mitsubishi Motors to sell only EVs, hybrids by mid-2030s
An ultra-small electric car that can be as inexpensive as its gasoline-powered competitors will be released this summer, according to Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. After the metropolitan government's 450,000 yen and the central government's 550,000 yen incentives for electric cars are applied, the model, which is based on Japan's mini-vehicle standard, will be offered for less than 1.5 million yen ($11,719) in Tokyo. The vehicle was jointly created by the two automakers, who kept the price cheap by capping its travel distance at 180 kilometers after a complete charge. The car will be marketed by Nissan under the name Sakura and by Mitsubishi under the name eK X EV with a beginning price of about 2.39 million yen. In 2025, Suzuki Motor Corp. and Daihatsu Motor Co. intend to release electrified minicars.
