The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has launched the MSC Improvement Program, a five-year initiative to support fisheries in enhancing their sustainability practices. Following a successful pilot, this program is designed for fisheries that are not yet MSC-certified, helping them develop independently verified action plans to meet sustainable standards.

With over 500 fisheries already certified by MSC and nearly 38% of global fish stocks overfished, the initiative aims to expand certification numbers. While participants won’t initially display the MSC eco-label, they will access certified supply chains once they meet specific sustainability and traceability criteria. Consumers will be informed of these fisheries’ progress through back-of-pack labeling, which will promote sustainable sourcing and support fishing communities.

This structured pathway complements existing Fishery Improvement Projects, reflecting MSC’s mission to preserve ocean resources and promote responsible fishing practices globally.

Some 10 years ago I proposed in my page in the Facebook which doesn’t exist anymore, that if the world population would like to be able to continue eating any fish in their future, they should at least for 5 years stop fishing completely all over the planet, to give to all the fish to replenish themselves and again fill all the seas, otherwise in some 10-15 years time no more fish would be, very possibly, swimming anywhere, but only plastic trash everywhere…
