118 countries commit to tripling renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency targets by 2030 at COP28

On the second day of the World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, EU President Ursula von der Leyen's unveiling of the Global Pledge on Renewables and Energy Efficiency marks a groundbreaking move by the EU and 118 countries. This initiative aims to dramatically amplify renewable energy capacity and bolster energy efficiency measures by 2030.

The pledge sets ambitious goals: tripling renewable energy capacity to at least 11 terawatts (TW) and doubling the annual rate of global energy efficiency improvements to 4%. Von der Leyen insisted on the urgent need to transition to a decarbonised energy system and phase out fossil fuels.
This joint proposal was made by the U.S., Europe, and the UAE, Japan added its support, and emerging and developing countries in Asia and Africa are being called upon to participate as well.
Highlighting a diverse coalition, von der Leyen stressed the shared belief among nations that achieving the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C goal demands a departure from fossil fuels. The EU pledged 2.3 bn euros from its budget over two years to support the global energy transition, promising green job creation and sustainable growth while significantly reducing emissions.

Crafted in collaboration with the COP28 Presidency and supported by key agencies, the pledge gained momentum early at COP28. It advocates concrete global actions to phase out fossil fuels, particularly coal, and urges reflecting this urgency in the final COP Decision.

What's interesting is that the commitment involves regular review mechanisms, with annual assessments to track progress toward the ambitious targets. Collaboration with financial institutions ensures the delivery of associated financial commitments.
