BNP Paribas is accused of financing Mafrig, a Brazilian agribusiness company, which is contributing to deforestation, the seizure of indigenous territories, and forced labor. Mafrig was responsible for "more than 120,000 hectares of illegal deforestation in the Amazon rainforest and the Cerrado savannah" between 2009 and 2020.
⚖️ In October 2022, the Brazilian NGO Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) and the French association Notre Affaire à Tous demanded that BNP Paribas end its financial support for Marfrig. 4 months later, BNP Paribas still hasn't, and now, it is taken to court!
4 days earlier, BNP Paribas was sued by three other environmental associations for its "significant contribution" to global warming, due to its oil and gas clients. You can read more about it and sign the petition in this climate review. Seems like a bad month for BNP Paribas and a good one for the environment! I hope it will make the bank reconsider financing deforestation and fossil fuels!

The company must immediately end its financial support for Marfrig and take steps to ensure that its investments are not contributing to environmental destruction and human rights abuses.
