#BuyMoreTime: Voices on Methane

Welcome to another edition in our series of articles about the importance of tackling methane and other short-lived climate pollutants now. The world is not on track to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, but by focusing on these super pollutants, we can #BuyMoreTime to stabilize the climate. Read more articles in this series on our #BuyMoreTime page and join us by signing our letter to UN Ambassadors, advocating for a Montreal Protocol to limit short-lived climate gases.

CO2 is the largest greenhouse gas, both in terms of the quantity emitted and its impact on our climate. Other greenhouse gases, however, are much more potent than CO2 and are responsible for a significant amount of the temperature rise the world is already experiencing. The most important of these non-CO2 gases is methane. Particle for particle, methane causes much more warming than CO2, but it breaks down much more quickly. Those properties provide us with an incredible opportunity to keep the 1.5º warming target within reach.

This session consists of conversations with two people doing incredibly important work in the methane space. It provides crucial insights into the state of the issue and the next steps which must be taken to curb methane emissions rapidly.

Discussion highlights

The need for immediate, global action
Reducing methane emissions from human-driven sources, such as agriculture, waste, and fossil fuels, is critical. Drawing on successful international strategies like the Montreal Protocol and securing global collaboration can accelerate progress.

Technological advancements in emission detection
Until recently, there has been no way to be sure how much methane was actually being released into the atmosphere. Now, tools like MethaneSat and handheld detectors provide accurate, large-scale data on methane emissions, empowering industries and governments to identify sources, ensure accountability, and take targeted actions.

Comprehensive climate strategies
Efforts to curb methane should extend to other short-lived pollutants, such as nitrous oxide, maximizing the impact on global warming and leveraging emerging technologies and international cooperation for swift results.
