If you’ve been paying attention to the fight against climate change, you know the challenges are dire. The carbon budget established by the Paris Agreement to keep average global temperature increases below 1.5ºC is nearly used up. And emissions levels continue to rise.
But emissions rates can feel abstract, disconnected from reality. Where are these emissions coming from? What would it mean on the ground level to stop them? How many major fossil fuel projects, for example, would need to be shut down for us to have any hope of keeping 1.5º alive?
These questions have answers, but finding such answers would take a dedicated carbon warrior dozens, perhaps hundreds, of hours of research. That's where CarbonBombs.org comes in. Launched by a collaboration between French organizations Data for Good and éclaircies, the website offers a user-friendly platform that aggregates and visualizes information about the world's largest fossil fuel projects, making it accessible to activists, researchers, and policymakers alike.
In 2022, Kühne et al. identified 425 massive fossil fuel extraction projects around the world, each likely to enable the release of over 1 gigaton of CO₂ emissions. These projects, dubbed “carbon bombs,” constitute the biggest single threats to global climate goals. According to CarbonBombs, even if all other emissions were abated, the carbon released from these projects will be twice the allowance to keep within the 1.5°C warming limit set by the Paris Agreement. CarbonBombs draws on this research to provide comprehensive details about these projects, including their locations, current status, and potential emissions. By making this data easily accessible, the platform helps activists highlight the most critical areas for intervention and encourages policymakers to prioritize critical climate thresholds over oil and coal profits.
I want to send climate love to both éclaircies and Data for Good for doing this important work and making such a tremendous resource available freely to the public. Making this type of information accessible is a crucial first step toward building the necessary momentum to defuse these carbon bombs and turn emissions trends around.

Defusing carbon bombs will go a long way in curbing the global warming effects as we are already in a big carbon debt globally

Indeed, defusing carbon bombs requires a multi-faceted approach. It also involves international cooperation to address the global nature of climate change and its impacts.
