The interlinked energy and climate crises in Europe have raised the debate on what our future energy system must look like. Storing intermittent energy and decarbonizing the energy supply are the most crucial parts of the urgent transition from fossil fuels to renewables, and we are happy to see that the European Commission is acknowledging that in its recent strategy document.
The European Commission deserves climate love for prioritizing storage technologies to harness excess energy from renewable production. This is a crucial action to increase the accessibility and efficiency of clean sources like solar and wind, while reducing reliance on backup fossil energy such as oil and gas.

Moreover, on March 10, 2023, European Commission President von der Leyen and U.S. President Biden released a joint statement highlighting the launch of the Clean Energy Incentives Dialogue. The goal is to build a transatlantic market where sustainable technologies can thrive. Things are clearly moving in the right direction for energy storage, offering a bright outlook for the realization of a decarbonized energy system.
While more steps need to be taken to acknowledge and incentivize long-duration energy storage (LDES) forms of the technology specifically, there is further positive news from the EU commission’s strategy. It acknowledges clean heat supply from energy storage as a key contributor to the renewable transition. This recognition opens the door for the advancement of long-duration thermal systems which supply combined heat and power (such as Azelio’s TES.POD solution), and are considered a vital tool in the fight against climate change.
The LDES Council is currently undertaking important work with the European Commission to achieve further recognition of the central role LDES plays in reaching our net-zero targets. Companies in the sector, including Azelio, are providing commercial solutions to create a positive impact on the planet.
We’re on the right track. The latest developments from the EU Commission demonstrate the legislators’ growing awareness and will serve to promote energy storage solutions for a greener, less heated planet. With an even greater understanding of the need for long-duration technologies, combined with the continuing support of leadership, we can come out of our energy crisis with a better and more sustainable system.

By utilizing high penetrations of variable renewable energy, energy storage is needed to keep the lights on and the electricity flowing when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing
