It’s time for a fossil free Nordic Ecolabel

Did you know it’s super simple to quit coal? Just don’t buy it! The old misunderstanding that 'all power mixes on the grid' is simply wrong. It is a very old misunderstanding based on a misconception of what electric power really is, and not knowing that Green Power is subject to an audit. So - get this straight: You have UglyPower in your electric outlets unless you make an active choice of Green Power. You consume Coal power unless you make an active choice of Green Power. When you have signed a Green Power contract - you have no more coal at home. We think that all companies with the Nordic Ecolabel (the Swan) should also use Green Power. Agree to this campaign if you want The Nordic Ecolabel to answer why they don’t demand Green Power in their criteria. Agree to this campaign if you want to see The Nordic Ecolabel’s response. The Swan needs to QUIT COAL!

I agree to Lars, that there are problems with the Guarantees of Origin system. To demand a connection in time and space, however, would not be necessary. The main problem is that the system will not lead to a real influence in the electricity mix until the demand exceeds the available amount of "green certificates". And as you and many others are so sceptic, this is unlikely to happen soon. What could be done by electricity retailers is to offer "new green electricity", by adding information about the age of the power plant to the "Guarantees of Origin". In Sweden and Norway, this could be done using the "Electricity Certificates" which are given to renewable energy power plants during the first 15 years of operation. If I could be sure that the amount of electricity I buy has been produced in a new solar or wind farm, I would truly contribute to making the electricity mix greener - regardless of the color of my electrons or if the electricity was produced the same second I used it. When the electricity mix becomes greener there will be an increasing demand for grid reinforcements and storage, but there is no need to include these aspects in my electricity contract.

Hi David As you see I specifically do not say "Buy Green Power" - I say "Quit Coal". Don't but Coal Power. I have been working with Ecolabelling for 20 years now and it is a fact that it is easier to get people to act on a negative labelling. Negative as in "Carcerogenic Bananas" or "Child Slave Labour". I think "Coal Power" has that same strong negative connotation. Svanen has 2000 licensees. If they start choosing all at once (as they will if the criterions are changed) this will affect the Nordpool market. I'm sure! /Per Ribbing

I understand the intention behind this post, and we should for sure do all we can to push renewable energy forward. But it is not that simple as stated in this post. The electricity coming out of your plug is not any greener just because you sign up for a greener offer at your supplier. You get the electricity that is in the grid however it was produced. If you want to know how green your electricity is right now you can look it up at electricitymap.org. You can find more details about the problem with green electricity contracts here: https://medium.com/electricitymap/why-green-electricity-contracts-fail-to-deliver-green-electricity-e0d66ca31d88

But we need to demand more green power and choosing green power is a way forward.

Hi Lars Actually, you DO get exactly the power you buy - not any other - when you buy power with Guarantees of Origin. This is the key finding of my research published in International Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences #154. Click here and read. My thesis will soon be uploaded. This is the new paradigm on power - and it has long been needed because - as you know - "It's not the currents of electrons that develop the energy system - it's the currents of money". /Per Ribbing https://www.graphyonline.com/journal/journal_archives.php?journalid=IJEES (go to #154)
