Tree planting in Samburu, Kenya

The Samburu People of Kenya Fight For Survival due to the effects of Climate Change The main climate risks in the lowlands of Samburu are heat stress and drought, which both affect crop and livestock productivity. At higher altitudes, flood risk is projected to be a key hazard in the future. Despite on- and off-farm efforts to increase resilience in the face of climate change, farmers’ adaptive capacity is low and agricultural yields have decreased in recent years. To reduce food insecurity and poverty increased employment opportunities in agriculture and sustainable alternative livelihoods must be developed. The county has recently experienced climate changes with hazards such as drought, heat stress, floods, and soil erosion. Overall climate change effects in Samburu include unreliable, erratic, and inadequate rainfall; recurring and prolonged droughts; high and increasing temperatures; and declining water levels. The Samburu are a semi-nomadic people, devoted to the preservation of their traditional customs. Culture, nutrition, and livelihoods are intertwined with their animals, which consist of cattle, goats, sheep, donkeys and camels. Given that Samburu diets consist predominantly of milk and occasionally blood from their cows, they are heavily reliant on their livestock for survival. For a people whose culture and history has been steeped in movement, the drought has created a devastating sense of stagnation. Hopelessness has, on occasion, opened the door to apathy. Women of the Loigama community (who traditionally carry the responsibility of fetching water for their families) must walk at least 20 kilometers to the closest water source and wait in long queues in the hot sun for their turn to fetch water from the stiff hand pump. When their 20 liter jerricans are finally full, it is time to make the arduous hike back home. With babies draped across their fronts and jerricans that can weigh up to 50 pounds strapped to their backs, they return home, weary, with little hope for relief. Many water pans and dams have all dried up. A typical story for a Samburu family facing servere drought is played out in the scene below. A dehydrated donkey takes its final breath— its lifeless face settling peacefully into the dry dust. The helpless owner sits by her donkey’s side— collected—but unable to hide the pain in her eyes. That scene may be the end of that chapter, but not the end of the story. A more hopeful chapter is about to unfold through a tree planting initiative with school children. Revitalize Homes & Gardens are mindful of the dire need to implement successful climate adaptation strategies which can start mitigating the effects of climate change. Our goal is to plant 100,000 trees in schools around Archer's Post in Samburu. The trees will be planted in phases over a period of 12 months to ensure we maximise on the rainy seasons to give the seeding the much need head start on their growing journey. 1. October 19th to 21st 2024, 15,000 trees will be planted in 6 schools. 2. March 2025, 60,000 trees will be planted which should benefit greatly from the long rains. 3. The final phase will be in October 2025 where we will plant 25,000 trees.

Our event for 19th to 21st October 2024 is all set. Our team is on the ground and all holes have been dug, seedlings received on site and children are practicing their songs, skits and poems. The rest of the team will leave Nairobi at 5 am on the morning of 19th October on a 7 hour drive to arrive in Archer's post at 11am, ready to plant the first trees. The story continues..... Samburu county falls among the ASAl areas of the country and so this would be a great initiative.

The best thing is that it the initiative has included the young generation in this planting of the trees activity hence teaching them by leading by example..All the best to the good intentions.
